LADIES YOU REALLY NEED TO READ THIS INFO: I’m on ER call this weekend and have already seen 3 hip fractures come in today. I operated on 2 this AM and one more scheduled tomorrow. It’s actually quite sad. Two of the ladies had fractured their opposite hip less than a year ago. One of them also fractured their shoulder today. Most of these fractures are due to osteoporosis. Despite being active and exercising women can lose more calcium then gain as they get older. This leads to fragile bones. So while you are young you should build up your bone density by doing weight bearing exercises and maintaining nutrition that supports calcium and vitamin D intake. Vitamin D helps your body use calcium. If you don’t get enough vitamin D, or if your body doesn’t absorb it well, you are at greater risk for osteoporosis. Your skin makes vitamin D when it is exposed to the sun and is also available in a few foods. However, many people still need a vitamin D supplement. The Institute of Medicine rec 600 IU/day of Vit D and 1000 mg/d of Calcium for females ages 19-50 and 1200 mg/d for post menopausal women. Along with diet and exercise, prevention also includes not smoking and limiting alcohol. Who should get a Bone Mineral Density test (DEXA)? All women 65 years of age and older should have a bone mineral density test. Additionally, postmenopausal women younger than 65 years who have one or more risk factors, women who present with fractures should have a bone mineral density test. You can look up risk factors on line. Just wanted to provide this info to all my female friends. Share w your moms and friends. Cheers.
